The Falconeer: Warrior Edition releases on August 5th, 2021 for PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. At the start of The Falconeer, players choose a randomized character. Diving deep into the setting is what pushed me forward, but the combat and missions are tedious at best. That and the numerous upgrades, because that’s how modern games hook players these days – numbers and upgrades. The Falconeer is a third-person aerial dogfighting game set in a beautifully rendered world full of intriguing lore and sky pirates riding on the backs of giant falcons. But the game’s story is told well enough – even if it’s through talking heads – that there’s always an incentive to keep on flying. There’s plenty to do but as with any game that hangs its hat on one core mechanic – in this case, aerial combat – repetition will set in.

Between missions, you’re free to explore the world and even go to other settlements to see what they’ve got for sale, or maybe take on some of their missions for extra cash rewards that can be used to upgrade the birdy wagon and the weapons. The open-world air combat game becomes an artistic expression on Microsofts next-gen console. It’s not a thrill-a-minute kind of game, though, and half the enjoyment comes in the peaceful periods between hectic shootouts in the clouds.
